Solid waste disposal needs good thought and thorough plannin
Posted by Geissinger47 @ Tue Nov 13, 2007 9:26 am
Solid waste can be defined as material that no longer has any value to the person who is responsible for it, and is not intended to be discharged through a pipe. It is generated by domestic, commercial, industrial, healthcare, agricultural and mineral extraction activities and accumulates in streets and public places. The words “garbage”, “trash”, “refuse” and “rubbish” are used to refer to some forms of solid waste. Many people feel that solid waste management is a simple affair - putting waste into a vehicle and unloading it at a dump. If this were true, then why do so many towns suffer from uncollected refuse blocking streets and drains, harboring flies and rats, and degrading urban environments? Successful solid waste management is rarely achieved without thought, effort and much learning from mistakes. The preparation and management of a good solid waste management system needs inputs form the source i.e. apartment buildings. Collection and disposal of domestic garbage from a building is of significance for public health and environmental sanitation. Hence, Solid waste Management System is an essential part of built environment. The planning of apartment building should include collection, handling and treatment of solid waste as applicable to building occupancy concerned.

In designing a collection system for an urban apartment premises, the aim shall be to provide suitable speedy and efficient conveyance of garbage to the municipal/corporation clearance, as an essential objective. The system introduced should avoid burning garbage which causes smoke pollution, littering of plastics, discarding organic waste in open land and encourage ‘source segregation’ and composting of organic waste at various levels at home and in apartment residential colonies.

Vermi-Compost treatment should be provided for organic waste in composting pits located in the shade. The pits should be used to receive the benign (devoid of non-degradable waste) garbage in periodic cyclic order. For example, five pits to receive garbage in five days and these 5 pits together must take daily load of garbage. The gross area of composting pit required will be about 0.1 esq. per person. The pits should not have the risk of inundation. Sorted garbage free from inert and toxic matter shall be applied in the composting pit in layers of 75 mm and spread and covered with a layer of 75 mm thick dry leaves followed by sprinkling of water. The compost may be removed from the bottom of the pit after 3 to 6 months. The compost so made is valuable manure for healthy organic farming.

Solid waste management is everyone’s responsibility. Installing a good solid waste management system in apartments and Kochi flats will aid achieving good environmental sanitation around urban habitat

  Exotic Pictures of Kerala

A Kerala Tour is the ultimate dream-come-true experience for a nature lover. An equable climate, a long shoreline with serene beaches, tranquil stretches of emerald backwaters, lush hill stations and exotic wildlife have made Kerala one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Asia. .

Alappuzha or Alleppey is home to Kuttanad - the rice bowl of Kerala - one of the very few places in the world where farming is done below sea level. Kuttanad is a land of lush paddy fields and stretches for 75 Km sandwiched between the sea and the hills. Kuttanad is the also one of the most beautiful backwaters region for a Kerala Tour cruise. It is here that most of the snake boat races are conducted and a majority of the rice boat & houseboat cruises are scheduled. These backwaters remind visitors of the famous dikes of Holland. A striking example of the indigenous agricultural engineering know-how, here cultivation and habitation are made possible at four to ten feet below the sea level. For this purpose extensive land has been reclaimed from the backwaters and is protected by dikes built around it. A leisurely cruise along the canals here is a memorable experience.

  15 minutes

Why is it I put off sewing my kitchen valence today, it looks so much better in there and no longer an eyesore to me. (off course it doesn't bother my husband) Okay so this project did take me more than 15 min. to complete (beginner sewer), but the point is...

make it a game with yourself to see if you can get "it" done in 15 min.! We waste so many 15 min. blocks of time (I do anyway) .

Like that laundry that needs folded, fold clothes for 15 min. then do something else, you might be surprised.

I dread doing dishes (no room for a dishwasher) it feels like I waste an hour doing it, but it really only takes me 10 - 20 min.

So let me know what you've been procrastinating on and can you do it in 15 minutes?

Good Luck!!!!
